New Program Available This Spring
December 30, 2009: You Won't Believe What You Can Do . . .
A group of students who register for Enterprise State Community College's courses this spring semester at the Enterprise Campus in the new Three-Dimensional Simulation and Modeling program will be learning to create something that looks as if it comes from Star Trek or The Terminator.
"These created objects seem so real that viewers often experience the desire to reach out to touch them," says Dr. Jean Johnson, ESCC director of the program.
"The environments are so realistic that viewers feel as if they are actually in the setting---flying an airplane onto a runway, walking through the city's industrial park, or arriving at the scene of an accident."
A special 16-week short-term certificate in 3-D Simulation and Modeling puts graduates into a unique career field that is growing not only in Alabama and the United States but around the world.
ESCC possesses an Advanced Visualization Center featuring a series of hardware and software capable of complex three-dimensional designs. A three-dimensional classroom creates an educational setting resembling a 3-D theater where the images "pop out" into the room and may be manipulated via computer technology.
Employment opportunities for Simulation and Modeling Technicians exists in such industries as information services, motion picture and video industries, specialized design services, aerospace product and parts manufacturing, and employment services.
"Additionally, graduates of this program will be qualified to operate home-based businesses that contract with businesses, industries, and entertainment and education providers throughout the United States. The independent contractor/small business owner would be ideal for disabled American veterans and military family members," says Dr. Johnson.
For more information about this fascinating course of study, contact Dr. Jean Johnson at (334) 347-2623, ext. 2316. For information about how to be admitted to the College or to register for classes call (334) 347-2623 or go online to www.escc.edu. Spring semester classes begin January 11.
Pell Grant Financial Aid Now Available for Full Year
The U.S. Department of Education has approved a new policy which allows students to receive a full-time Pell Grant on a year-round basis. Prior to this, the grant funded a maximum of two full-time semesters during a traditional academic year.
"The Federal Pell Grant program is the foundation upon which most financial aid packages are based," says Dr. Chip Quisenberry, Enterprise State Community College Financial Aid Director. "Annual award amounts vary according to student status and payment schedules provided to ESCC by the U. S. Department of Education. These grants do not have to be repaid unless a student completely withdraws from ESCC before attending at least 60% of a given term."
To be eligible for the third semester of Pell Grant funding, students have to enroll in courses that apply toward their second year of college. They have to be enrolled for a minimum of 12 credit hours per semester in the preceding academic year, and then must enroll for a minimum of 6 credit hours for the summer semester to qualify. Payment continues as with the other semesters, once per semester.
According to the National Association of Student Financial Aid Administrators, the first summer semester awards will be applied in 2010. To obtain any financial aid, students must apply online at fafsa.ed.gov. To apply for financial aid for the 2010-2011 academic year, the deadline for ESCC students is midnight, May 15, 2010.
For more information about the Pell Grant and other financial aid programs, call Dr. Quisenberry at (334) 347-2623, ext. 2214 or go online to www.escc.edu.

ESCC's Tuition Lowest in Alabama
November 13, 2009- Although the Alabama State Board of Education approved a $14.00 increase in tuition for the two-year college system, Enterprise State Community College still has the lowest tuition of the public colleges or universities in Alabama. With tuition at $85 per credit hour for in-state students, ESCC is still half that of most four-year Alabama institutions.
Many students will get additional assistance if they apply for financial aid. The Federal Pell Grant has extended awards to include summer semesters which more than offsets the increase in tuition. Other financial aid assistance for ESCC students includes scholarships, VA benefits, and loans. ESCC Financial Aid counselors are available to assist students in the financial aid application process.

Computer Program Picks Up Speed! |
The Computer Maintenance and Networking program at Enterprise State Community College accelerates into a fast lane for students this upcoming fall semester.
Interested students will be able to complete 19 of a 26-credit-hour certificate within just 20 weeks. Each of the classes will be held for four weeks.
"The reason we are taking this approach is to provide those interested in a career in information technology a means of getting there as quickly as possible," says ESCC instructor Ken Persin.
The classes are set up to provide maximum hands-on experience. Students will be prepared to take the industry-recognized certification exams in A+, Network+, and Microsoft.
With this training students will be prepared to own and operate computer repair businesses or to work on network computers and equipment.
"This move to accelerate the program of study is timely because the Department of Labor Occupational Outlook Handbook, 2008-09 Edition, shows this career field is expected to grow by 27 percent, which is 83,000 jobs in the next ten years," says Persin.
Persin also explained that average salaries range from $50,000-$75,000 nationwide, and $35,000-$60,000 in Alabama.

Two-year college system now pays half the cost of GED test for adult learners |
MONTGOMERY – Adult students interested in taking the General Equivalency Diploma (GED) test at Department of Postsecondary Education-funded locations around the state may now qualify to take the test for half the previous testing fee: $25 instead of the normal $50.
Alabama Community College System (ACCS) Interim Chancellor, Joan Davis has approved the use of state-appropriated adult education funds to help defray the cost of GED testing fees for adult education students in non-institutionalized settings.
Students greatly increase their chances of passing the GED exam by participating in free GED preparation programs. Eighty-eight percent of adult education students who set that as their goal pass the GED exam, compared with a 60 percent pass-rate for all GED test-takers.
“We cannot risk individuals passing up the opportunity to better themselves and their communities because they cannot afford the cost of the GED test,” Davis said. “By absorbing half of the cost we are alleviating some of the financial pressure which will hopefully allow the test-takers to focus on the test and pass it.”
Formerly, the test fee for individuals taking the GED test for the first time was $50. With the equivalency diploma, adult education students will be better prepared to enter the workforce or postsecondary education or training.
“Despite the tough economic times, we are committed to assisting our students with the fee because we want to provide them with every avenue available to earn a credential that can help transform their lives,” said Susan Price, vice chancellor for Instructional and Student Services. “For people in Alabama who do not possess a high school diploma, obtaining a GED opens the door to a pathway that can lead them to better, more financially stable lives.”
To be eligible to participate in this program, an adult education student must:
- Be currently enrolled in a Department of Postsecondary Education-funded
adult education program (GED Preparation class)
- Be pre-tested on an approved adult education assessment instrument (this
test is given during GED preparation classes)
- Have received at least 30 hours of instruction
