English 101 provides instruction and practice in writing extended compositions and the development of analytical and critical reading skills and basic reference and documentation skills in the composition process.
Taking an online class is very beneficial for people leading busy lives. With work and family to take care of, an online course might be the only way to even take a college course. While it is tempting to think that you will be able to do the work for this class in your “spare time,” don’t fool yourself. Taking English 101online is very time intensive.
The skills necessary to complete this course successfully include reading, application, organization, and analyzation. You have to read and understand the text and lecture notes, apply them in order to organize your writing effectively, and then analyze your writing to make sure you have completed the assignment correctly.
In addition to these "mental" skills, you also need to have basic word processing skills. Can you set margins? Double space? Do you know how to center and left align? All of these tasks are necessary to produce a properly formatted paper.
An online course requires you to be self-motivated and self-disciplined. You will not be in a classroom for me to “nag” about getting your work completed on time. To some extent, you are your own instructor, having to both criticize and encourage yourself. However, you will not be alone. I am an active participant as an online instructor. I check on the class daily - answering e-mails, grading assignments, cheerleading and scolding as needed. I truly want every student to succeed.
