SYLLABUS

 

Text: The Norton Anthology of American Literature, 7th ed. Nina Baym, et al. Vols. C, D. and E.

Course Content: A survey of American Literature from the Civil War to the present.

Course Objectives: Upon successfully completing English 252, a student should:

  1. gain general knowledge of the literary heritage of America as reflected in the literature from the late eighteenth century to the present.
  2. increase their consciousness of current issues and American culture.
  3. become familiar with the major writers, their significant works, and their major themes.
  4. detect thematic relationships among the works of these writers.
  5. understand and use the applicable literary terms.
  6. gain experience in analytical thinking, reading, and writing.

Grading:

Four Major Exams (100 points each) on:

 

NOTE:One of the four exams will be a proctored exam in which you will have to either come to campus to take the exam OR make arrangements through the instructor to take the exam in the presence of a responsible authority figure. More on this will be forthcoming.

All assignments and exams (except the one to be proctored) will be posted in the CALENDAR, as well as under the ASSIGNMENTS and EXAMS link.

Attendance:

The Enterprise-Ozark Community College (EOCC) attendance policy is outlined in the STUDENT HANDBOOK / COLLEGE CATALOG. Using the course bulletin board and weekly interaction with the instructor via email will serve as attendance and class participation. FOR FINANCIAL AID it is very important that students log in and email the instructor on the first day of classes, as well as on a regular basis (at least 2-3 times a week).

Withdrawal:

Students who wish to withdraw from class must fill out the withdrawal form, have the form signed by the instructor, and submit it to the Registrar’s office by the last class day of the semester. Students who discontinue attendance in the course without officially withdrawing will receive an “F” for that course. The student will receive the grade the day the course is dropped, not the day the student stops attending class. No student may withdraw during final exam days.
