Study Notes for Test Use

In an effort to improve test performance and to foster critical thinking on the part of students, I will allow students to use a limited amount of study notes as they take the tests.

This activity will work as follows:

  1. Students may write any material on a note sheet which they think will help them with a test and may use this note sheet as they take a test.
  1. Note sheets must meet the following criteria:
  • Note sheets are limited in size to one (1) side of one (1) regular 8.5 by 11 inch sheet of paper. Students are not allowed to use more than one side of a note sheet unless it is for a comprehensive final exam. In cases of comprehensive final examinations, students will be allowed to use both sides of a regular sheet of paper.
  • Information on note sheets must be printed or written in cursive (no typed material will be allowed).
  • Students may work individually or in groups to create the note sheets. Although I encourage students to work together as they think about what to include on their note sheets and how to organize them, there will be no photo copying or sharing of note sheets.

  1. Before the test, testing personnel will check to make sure that note sheets meet the criteria listed above in item two. If a note sheet fails to meet the criteria, the student will not be allowed to use the note sheet.
  1. At the end of the test, students will be required to hand in the note sheet along with the rest of the test materials. This will allow the instructor to monitor note sheet usage.
  1. If a student fails to bring a note sheet to the test session, they will have to take the test without the benefit of any notes.
