INSTRUCTOR: Dr. Jean Johnson

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

To develop a personal response to various works of music by knowing the criteria by which to judge the quality of a piece of music.

To further develop a personal response to a work of music by having an awareness of the process involved in the creation of that particular work of music.

Also, to develop a personal response to a work of music by applying methods for analyzing that particular work of music.

Finally, to develop a personal response to a work of music by knowing its genre, the time period during which it was written, and its cultural and historical contexts.

Welcome to Music Appreciation (MUS101) Online, an interactive music class delivered to your home via the Internet! What is the difference between this course and a regular Music Appreciation course? In terms of the amount of study and the testing procedures, not much. You will be responsible for reading the textbook and web-published lecture material and listening to the listening assignments. In addition to three graded listening assignments (25%), there are six tests (60%) covering six sections of material with Test Six to include a few questions on material over the entire semester (final exam) to be taken in a supervised environment (testing lab at any of EOCC'S four campuses) with a picture ID. If you need a remote proctor for this test, please contact the instructor immediately to arrange the details. You will also have one group presentation project/discussion participation grade counting 1-15 points (15% of your total grade).

You will also be expected to check the discussion board for messages and discussion questions. Interaction with other students in the class over the Internet is recommended, so help each other by responding to questions and debating issues.

Please take note that EOCC does not endorse any advertisements that you may come across on any other public web site. EOCC disclaims liability for data, information, or opinions expressed in chat rooms, discussion forums, or web pages not officially sponsored by the college. Careful attention has been given to choosing web links that are of high quality, but you may find yourself somewhere unsavory through a series of links. Simply stop your browser and return to the address of the opening page for this course (suggestion: bookmark the opening page for MUS101 on your browser after you fill out the initial attendance form).

The main difference between an Internet course and a regular course is that you will not be coming to the campus two or three times a week. However, contact with the instructor via e-mail is encouraged. I will do my best to send a timely response to your e-mail. By taking an online rather than a traditional classroom course, your schedule will be much more flexible around other work and domestic responsibilities. Remember: staying self-motivated to keep up the pace is an important characteristic for success. Deadlines and test dates will be strictly enforced.

TEXTBOOK: The Enjoyment of Music, Machlis & Forney, Tenth edition (shorter), 2007.

Students are expected to purchase the online textbook and the set of CD's that accompanies it. You may also visit the publisher's website for this textbook. HINT: When accessing the publisher's website, choose the Tenth Edition, Shorter. This link should require no password, but if you are asked, try "music appreciation."

LISTENING: You will be expected to complete three listening assignments (two essays each assignment for a total of six essays during the semester) on selected music from your four-CD set sold with the textbook. The preferred way of delivery is by submitting through WebCT at the Listening Assignments page, but you may also choose to send your assignments to me via e-mail as an attachment or in the body of the e-mail itself, or you may send them to me via snail mail (must arrive by the due date).

TESTS: Your tests will be available online under Evaluation Tools on WebCT. Note that there are specific calendar deadlines for taking each test. (Check your WebCT calendar regularly). If you do miss a deadline, you must notify me immediately so that I can make the test available to you again if the situation merits that action. Failure to take the test by the deadline will result in a lower grade: one letter grade lower for every three days late. Don't panic if you have trouble taking a test online. We at the college will give you any technical advice you need, or you may come to see me in person for a hard copy test if necessary. Prepare for your tests by reading the textbook material carefully and more than once. There are study guides under in the Study Tools area with important terms. There are also very good practice tests at your publisher's website that will help you prepare for the real tests. You will receive instant results on the practice tests, but the results of the "real" tests will be posted the day after the deadline for taking it has passed.

ATTENDANCE: Students will be monitored as to the number of times they have logged in and "attended" the homepage for the purposes of Financial Aid. Students are expected to log in to this course at least five times per week.

EXTRA-CREDIT WORK: Unless there is a very special extenuating circumstance, there is no extra-credit work in this course.

GRADING: The student's final grade will be the result of averaging the six test grades (60%), three listening grades (25%), and one group project/class participation (15%). Attitude and participation may also be taken into consideration, positively or negatively.

WITHDRAWAL POLICY:  Withdrawal from the class requires the completion of a "drop" or "withdrawal" form by the student. It is the student's responsibility to complete this form. Failure to drop or withdraw will result in the receipt of a grade of "F" for the course.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY IN EDUCATION and AMERICANS WITH DISABILITIES:  EOCC will comply with all Equal Opportunity in Education and Americans with Disabilities Policies with regard to distance learning. Any students whose disabilities fall within ADA must inform the instructor at the beginning of the term of any special needs or equipment necessary to accomplish the requirements for this course. If you have any questions, please contact the Office of the Registrar (LW100) or call (334) 393-3752 x 2233.

PLEASE NOTE: The materials on this Music Appreciation web site are only for the use of students enrolled in this course for purposes associated with this course and may not be retained or further disseminated.

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY: Enterprise-Ozark Community College regards academic dishonesty as a serious offense against the integrity of the educational process. In particular, the College recognizes two forms of academic dishonesty as a matter for disciplinary action. These are cheating and plagiarism. (see page 44 in the EOCC catalogue).

OTHER PERTINENT INFORMATION: The best way to contact the instructor is via e-mail through WebCT (see navigation bar to your left). Other ways to contact the instructor: Visit FO127 on the Enterprise campus or call (334) 393-ESJC or 347-2623, ext. 2316. Messages for the instructor may be left on the answering machine at this extension or with the college receptionist.
