PSY 200 - General Psychology

 

Syllabus

Course Description:

The study of human nature and behavior, with focus on the leading researchers and latest developments in the field. This is an introductory psychology course consisting of text readings, web-based assignments, and discussion.

Class Meetings:

This is an online course with four exam dates. See the Schedule page for dates. Tests are taken online.

Course Objectives:

  • Explores the major psychological approaches to the study of behavior including their history, contributors, methods, research findings, terminology, and current directions
  • Promotes the development of scientific values and skills, a recognition of individual bias in experimentation, and the ability to evaluate generalizations
  • Integrates new developments in classic research findings
  • Challenges some traditional perspectives in light of new knowledge
  • Illuminates the decision-making processes used by researchers.

Text:

Wade and Tavris, Invitation to Psychology Online, Third Edition.


Exams:

Four exams, available online, will be given on the dates indicated on the Schedule page. The exams will cover material presented in the assigned text readings. Each exam is worth 100 points. Grades will be posted to website on Monday after each exam scheduled.

Chat Room Participation:

Students will be offered the option of participating in a student "chat room" on a regular basis. The instructor will answer/discuss questions regarding the course materials. Participation is not required but encouraged. Dr. Crook will be monitoring the PSY200 chat room on Friday mornings from 9:00 am until 10:00 am.


Grades:

A 90 to 100%
B 80 to 89%
C 70 to 79%
D 60 to 69%
F Below 60%


Withdrawal Policy:

Withdrawal from the class requires the completion of a "drop" or "withdrawal" form by the student. It is the student's responsibility to complete this form. Failure to drop or withdraw will result in the receipt of a grade of "F" or "FA" for the course.
